Small acts of self-love
refusing to shrink, calling in gentleness, and a tarot spread for tomorrow's new moon
The Northeast had a small snowstorm yesterday, and as I write, I sit looking out at the tops of the bare maple trees now covered in snow. They have a shimmering celebratory look. By tomorrow, the rain will wash it all away, making everything grey again. For now, I have the shades pulled open in my room, and I can see the sun rising over the tops of the buildings and the trees glinting in pinks and oranges. Every day, I tell myself I should be out there taking in the sunrise, but I haven’t acted on this desire because it would require me to get dressed and stand in the snow.
In just two weeks from today, I’ll have no choice but to stand outside at sunrise. Our puppy comes home soon and I’m both savoring my last two weeks of sleep and freedom and anticipating his arrival. It feels very much like Rachel and I are about to be parents. The last time I had a puppy in my life was over 12 years ago, and I can barely remember how much work and excitement it was. I’m sure it will come back to me.
I’ve been trying to embody the idea of a gentle start to the New Year. Keeping to my schedule of writing, meditating, and not putting pressure on myself to be better or new. A lovely sentiment popped into my inbox over the weekend: “New Year, favorite me!” the subject line said, and I even dismissed that because it feels like too much pressure to have to like myself more than ever. Instead, I’ll focus on being there for myself through small acts of love and care.
I’m going through the tedious process of applying for life insurance. I have life insurance, but since getting married last year, I’ve decided it makes sense to have another policy for Rachel in case something were to happen. Is something bad going to happen? And as a psychic, wouldn’t I know ahead of time?
I have a friend who, when we meet for coffee, will occasionally wave a hand around her head comically and say to me, “you don't see anything bad, do you?” I love my friend, but it’s not my favorite question as it implies I have a certain power or responsibility. I truly don’t want to know these things about friends. I don’t believe the spirit world will tell me “bad” things that are going to happen. If my intuition does sound an alarm, I know I’ll have to deal with the consequences, but that’s not what the Spirit World generally does.
Psychics don't get the lottery numbers, and we don’t know when we’re going to die.
I’m not afraid of dying. I do like the idea of taking care of the people who count on me when I’m no longer here.
The process of risk analysis from an insurance underwriting team is humbling. They ask you hundreds of questions, all aimed at answering, “How likely is she to die early?”
At one point, my agent said to me, “If you weighed in at one pound lighter than you put on your application, you’ll get a superior rate,” and I immediately said “No! No! No! I’m not putting myself through that. I can feel my blood pressure rising just thinking about a diet.” He laughed, sounded perplexed, and said, “Okay then.”
It was one of my small acts of self-love. I’ve come too far in disordered eating recovery to try and shrink myself into a box now. The monthly cost is far less than my mental health is worth.
When I’m not seeing clients, I’ve been working on new blogs for my website. This latest one is a doozy. It’s going to be a massive list of questions to ask your tarot deck in all types of categories. According to Google, people want to know what to ask about their life purpose, their crush, their relationship, and so on. I’ve sat with a tarot deck and tried to transport myself into every situation a querent might be coming from as I’ve worked on this article for the last three months. It sounds funny to put Google and Magic in the same sentence, but I do love the magic of Google.
The idea that someone can be on the other side of the world and have an intuitive download: how do I know my deceased loved one is visiting me? That sends them to a search engine and directs them to my writing. It’s pure magic to me, the Electric Curtain in action. I get emails from so many different people living amazing and diffferent lives who’ve resonated with my words on synchronicity and the spirit world.
In the meantime, there is a new moon on Thursday, and I want to offer a tarot spread that can support you with the areas of your life that a new moon in Capricorn might be highlighting. You don’t need to follow astrology or the moon cycle to use these questions. You truly don’t even need a tarot deck. You can meditate or journal on these questions as it suits you.
A new moon in Capricorn creates an energy that draws our attention to the most grounded aspects of our lives. It urges us to consider our vision for the future and poses the question, “How can you get there?”
These questions are infused with the self-love that we all need when we consider change. They reject the idea that you are not already worthy, loved, and enough.
A tarot spread for the new moon in Capricorn:
Question 1: What memories from my past am I ready to make peace with?
Question 2: What can I add to my vision for a sustainable future that both nourishes and excites me?
Question 3: Where can I draw support and inspiration from?
Question 4: Knowing that newness requires room to flourish, where can I make space in my life for change to occur?
Question 5: What does the spirit world want me to know about the future shape of my dreams and desires?
