Knocks, Flickers and Messages From Beyond
A New Discovery About How the Spirit World is Evolving Along with Us

I spend so much time talking about, practicing, and teaching mediumship, and yet there are certain things I may never fully understand about it.
And that’s what I love about it. I love being devoted to something that will always retain a sense of mystery and magic, something I won’t completely grasp in this lifetime. Mediumship is as vast as it is accessible, and that accessibility—the idea that everyone has some ability to tap into it—feels like a gift.
But even within this practice, questions arise. Some I sit with for years before finding clarity, while others remain unanswered.
A couple of weeks ago, I was in conversation with the spirit world when a particular question popped into my mind:
Why do some spirit people seem to have special skills while others don’t?
Patterns in Spirit Communication
Over the years, I’ve noticed patterns in how spirit communicates during readings. These patterns often reveal distinct personalities or energies that seem tied to the way they interact with us in the physical world.
Take knocking, for example. Sometimes during readings, I hear distinct knocks on my walls—so clear and loud that it’s impossible to ignore. It usually happens in response to something significant I’ve shared, almost as if the spirit is emphasizing, “Yes! That’s it!”
I’ve come to associate this type of communication with grandmotherly spirit people—or those who embody nurturing, wise, and gentle energy. They’re loving, kind, and warm, and their presence seems to carry that same steady, grounding quality.
Then there are electronics—flickering lights, TVs turning on, radios playing, or fire alarms going off. This type of interaction tends to come from spirits with bold, playful, action-oriented energy, often young men or those with strong masculine traits. Their communication is direct, vibrant, and impossible to ignore—just like their personalities when they were alive.
When Spirit Gets Your Attention Loud and Clear
This brings me to a recent experience that beautifully illustrates this.
I was in my office, focused on work, when I heard a loud, blaring siren coming from the front room. Confused, I went to investigate and found that the sound was coming from an old alarm system I didn’t even know was functional.
This alarm had never gone off in the two years I’d been in this space. To stop the noise, I had to take it apart, pulling out wires and all.
As I worked to quiet the alarm, I distinctly heard a voice from the spirit world say, “We’re going to talk about this in a little while.” It was curious and a bit cryptic, but I had a mediumship reading over Zoom with a family starting in a few minutes, so I set it aside for the moment.
It was during that reading that the puzzle pieces fell into place. I connected with a young man in spirit, and he began sharing a story about strange occurrences in his family’s home—specifically, their alarm system going off. The spirit person explained that his family had come to understand these events as a way that he was trying to connect with them from the other side.
Then the family shared with me— and this part that gave me chills —their alarm had gone off just ten minutes before the reading had begun. Nearly the exact time mine did, despite us being on opposite sides of the country.
How Spirit Blends with Me
When connecting with the spirit world, each spirit person blends with me in a unique way. Mediumship is deeply personal, and the way I perceive a spirit varies greatly depending on who they are and how they choose to connect.
Sometimes I perceive them by feeling their energy—it’s as if their essence merges with mine, and I can sense their personality or emotions. Other times, I see them in my mind, almost like a memory. Occasionally, I see them outside my mind, as a holographic shape or a face popping up in my peripheral vision.
There are moments when I hear their voice, catching the tone or cadence that reflects who they were in life. I might even smell them—a familiar cologne, the scent of their favorite flowers, or something unique, like cigar smoke or freshly baked bread.
The way their physical presence translates through me is also incredibly varied. For example, blending with someone who was physically large feels different than blending with someone petite. I might sense arthritis in their hands or the effects of osteoporosis in their posture. These sensations come through in vivid, sometimes surprising ways, and I never know how a spirit person will connect with me until they do.
Spirit Abilities and Evolving in the Afterlife
Recently, the spirit world shared something with me that feels deeply profound:
Just as we have unique abilities and gifts to develop here on earth—whether it’s creativity, intuition, traditional knowledge, design, or communication—spirit people also have unique abilities in the afterlife.
And just like us, they must learn how to embrace and develop those abilities.
The soul’s journey doesn’t end with physical death.
Spirit people are still discovering who they are, exploring their gifts, and learning how to interact with the world around them. For some, this might mean figuring out how to influence the physical environment — knocking, manipulating electronics, or creating synchronicities.
They shared that not every spirit person is equally adept at these things right away. Some seem naturally skilled, while others take time to learn and experiment, much like we do when developing our own talents in life.
It’s a reminder that growth doesn’t stop when we transition; the soul is always evolving.
The same creativity, curiosity, and drive to connect that fuels us in life continues on the other side.
Embracing the Mystery
Mediumship continues to surprise and teach me. Each reading, each knock, and each flickering light carries the essence of the spirit person who sends it. And while I may never fully understand the why or the how, I’ve come to embrace the beauty of the unknown.
Because isn’t that part of the magic?
With love,
Sheryl
