We all have a certain energy within us that we bring to different aspects of our lives. Considering this can give you a deeper insight into yourself. The roles we all play take energy, and sometimes, we put away certain parts of ourselves.
Consider how you present yourself as a parent, partner, friend, teacher, colleague, or sibling. Even when we’re being authentic, each role might require something different.
Beneath these roles is your spiritual essence, or “true self.”
You for you—you when you are not presenting your energy to another person.
Meditating is one way to reach this place, but you’ve probably felt your own spiritual essence the last time you were having fun or fully present in the moment.
When we connect to the spirit world, we do so through this space of truth and authenticity. The spirit world recognizes and loves each of us not for our physical form or accomplishments but for our spiritual essence and love.
They connect to our light.
I want to share a story with you, and at the end of this story, I’m going to share my favorite way to connect to this part of yourself.
A few years ago, I attended an invitation-only trance workshop in Holland. Through a series of synchronicities, I met a woman at the Arthur Findlay College who invited me to participate in this workshop she was orchestrating. She told me she had been channeling Gordon Higginson, a past president of the Arthur Findlay College, generally acknowledged as one of the greatest mediums of the last century and he told her to invite mediums with a specific energy to this trance seminar.
The inner call for me to attend this workshop was strong. Before she even spoke, I knew I was going to say yes to whatever it was she asked. After I said yes, I felt nervous immediately. I didn’t know many of the mediums attending, and they all had years more experience than me. I began practicing and decided to sit in trance every day for a year to prepare for the trip.
Six months went by without any word, and then I received a letter with instructions on how to attend. I immediately sent my payment, booked my flight, and found myself traveling by train to Winterswijk, Netherlands, a few months later.
It was one of the experiences that has dramatically shaped my life, creating and ending friendships. And most importantly, connecting me more deeply to myself. Every exercise brought me closer to the truth of myself, which is the beauty and trance-formation of trance work.
When you sit to move into a trance state, you invite the spirit world in very close. Through patience and practice, you allow your conscious mind to move aside, and a spirit person blends their energy with you. In this state, you’ll have little body awareness, and it’s like the spirit world is holding your mind.
Not every medium has a great capacity or desire for trance. It can feel intense but also lovely once you are experienced. Like an altered state of consciousness, there can be a feeling of euphoria, and time passes differently.
After my intense year of practice, I could sit for nearly an hour, and it felt like only a few minutes. You might be thinking that I am so spiritual or patient or dedicated to sit for an hour. Let me tell you, though, that my mind is always busy, I have ADHD, and I am a naturally fidgety person. It’s the magic and excitement of connecting to the spirit world that allowed me to do this. I could never enjoy sitting quietly for an hour without them.
In one of my favorite exercises, our tutor explained that we were to move ourselves into a trance state and ask the spirit world to show us what energy we bring to the spirit world. Using the framework of a “costume or uniform.”
We worked in pairs, and I set an intention to be shown my partner’s “costume.” I sat in trance for about twelve minutes. When I returned from the deeper state of blending with spirit, I told her what I’d seen: She was a child wearing sparkling sneakers and a special belt, like a superhero.
She shared with me that she had shoes like the ones I described when she was a child growing up in Africa. She had a cousin who fell into a river and was eaten by a crocodile. When she went to play near the river, her parents made her wear a special belt that was supposed to protect her.
She understood the meaning of my being shown this as the symbolism of a form of protection from the spirit world. Even though she knew and trusted that there was nothing to fear, she had some reservations and a feeling of wanting to shield herself.
It seemed to me that after we talked and she had an awareness of this protection she was bringing, she felt freer. It goes against a lot of conditioning to let go and allow the spirit world to hold your mind.
When it was my turn, I watched my partner move herself into trance. I imagined projecting my aura around her so she could see my “costume” and waited to hear what I looked like to the spirit world. I had the thought, “What baggage might I be carrying?”
When she returned to consciousness, she smiled at me and said you're a flight attendant. She explained that she had seen me running back and forth around an airplane cabin, taking orders, making sure that everyone had what they needed and that everyone was happy and comfortable. I resonated with this and still do. I also laughed at having heard the word baggage in my thoughts.
After all, connecting with the spirit world is my profession. I take it seriously, and I want to manage everything as best I can. I also think it speaks to my people-pleasing nature, wanting to make sure everyone is comfortable. Since I know that the spirit world has infinite intelligence, I know that they chose an airplane specifically because I am afraid of flying. I didn’t really embrace flying until I began to embrace my mediumship and needed to travel. I spent years suppressing my mediumship abilities.
The fact that I’ve chosen to work in an environment that previously scared me made this a perfect metaphor for my work.
You don’t need to study or sit in trance to feel and know your spiritual essence. Spending time with yourself and simply considering the roles you play in life is one way to become aware of it.
If you’re still reading this, I want to share something with you. A few years ago I recorded my first meditation to help people connect to their spiritual essence and understand their own energy. As a thanks for being a subscriber I’d like to share it with you for free. You can use the code newsletter to download your free meditation here. If you try it, I’d love for you to comment and share your thoughts.

Beautiful story, Sheryl! 🌟 I appreciate your sharing and wonder about how you went from suppression of your talents to embracing them as a professional. I downloaded your guided meditation and just listened. I entered a very light meditative trance state. It was very soothing, although a bit too fast for my pace. I saw some images that I have long identified with when prompted to see myself as how the spirit world sees me. Funny thing, the mind; afterwards, I have some doubt about this vision. "Isn't this my own projection?", the mind asks. "Is this how the spirit world sees me? Is this how my soul/spirit/higher self really appears, or are these images just symbols for the deeper thing that is me?" Perhaps it's a yes to all of the above. Anyhow, those are my thoughts. Many thanks for your work here and for the meditation 🙏🏼
