A Tarot Spread for Self Doubt
When you need to believe in and hold yourself through the hard choices
We all experience self-doubt at times. Moments may creep up on us, and sometimes, it can feel like a week—or season-long loop we are stuck in.
Both my work in corporate finance and my work as a psychic medium have shown me that no matter who we are or what our lives look like—CEOs, celebrities, professional athletes, and the most “put together” people, you know, experience moments of self-doubt and questioning.
When I started working in commercial truck sales, one of my mentors, who is now in spirit, used to coach me on confidence. When I felt intimidated quoting prices to someone with their own private jet, he’d say, “Remember, they put their pants on one leg at a time.”
I both laugh and feel flooded with emotion remembering this. Last year, while boarding a plane home from my first time traveling to teach a new mediumship group, I heard this line playing in my mind. I started telling my wife about Bob and what a great mentor he was—honest and kind with an endless supply of Dad jokes. He helped me find my way in an industry where I was almost always the only woman in the room. He helped me feel like I belonged.
When our plane landed, my ex-husband had called and with the sad news that he’d passed away suddenly.
One of the blessings of my life has been having mentors who took an interest in my success and held me accountable. Since then, one of the most meaningful messages I have ever received was from a medium I was coaching who connected with Bob shortly after he passed.
This sounds strange, she said, but he wants me to say, “Go get 'em, tiger.”
I closed my eyes and pictured my twenty-year-old self shy and questioning and felt a well of gratitude rising up for the man who wore Harley Davidson motorcycle boots with his suit and let me follow him outside on his cigarette breaks to ask questions about Ford diesel engines.
When you are young, and someone takes the time to pour their knowledge into you, it can shift how you think about yourself. The little phrases he left me with, “Keep your head up” and “Don’t let someone else tell you who you are,” drowned out my own doubts.
Even now, I can hear his gravelly voice, and it gives me a feeling of being watched over.
I created this tarot spread for moments you need to feel uplifted and supported.
When you need to believe in and hold yourself through the hard choices.
*If you don’t have a tarot or oracle deck, you can use these prompts to journal or meditate on.
1. What from my past is influencing how I am seeing this situation?
I was reminded this week by Andrea Gibson of Anaïs Nin's quote, ““We don't see the world as it is, we see it as we are.” Andrea wrote about their experience seeing the Grand Canyon at both high and low points in their life and the difference a perspective shift can make.
2. If I zoom out on the story of my life, how will I look back on this moment?
This is a technique I use when I’m doing an intuitive reading. I can zoom out and take a bird' s-eye view of my client's journey, and it can provide such clarity. Often, what’s vexing us won’t matter in a year and the things we overlook we’ll look back on with longing.
3. What gifts do I possess that I’m overlooking or undervaluing?
One thing I notice about highly intuitive folks is that we tend to undervalue our abilities. When we are sensitive and highly empathic, we might think of those traits as burdens or flaws when they are our calling and purpose.
4. What lesson is this challenge highlighting for me?
Not all life’s challenges have a clear lesson, but most do. Asking this question with an open mind can depersonalize what’s happening around us and help us take an objective look.
5. What does my future self want me to know about this moment?
Time is a funny thing, and whether you believe there is a future you out there (I do) you can use your imagination to tap into what she wants you to know.
6. What does the spirit world want me to know?
The spirit world loves and guides you unconditionally. Ask for their help and listen closely for the answers.
They are often simple, loving, and direct. Sometimes, I ask a complex question, and I am answered with “Look through a lens of love” or “Imagine how things might go better than you expect.”
Thanks for being here.
With love,
Sheryl
